Department is established in 1951.Course are taught at undergraduate level B. Sc. I and B.Sc.II with the aim to sensitize students of rural and urban areas towards learning Botany which is major basic science with lot of scope in research and development. Biodiversity conservation is the Global need today. Western Ghats has rich Biodiversity and comes under one of the hot spots of Biodiversity. Considering the urge of it’s conservation department is taking active efforts by organizing workshops, tours, lectures and awareness programs. Faculty is active in designing projects to sensitize students to learn plants and it’s applicability, methods to enlist them, conserve them. Global need of plant propagation and biodiversity conservation is to be fulfilled by research and practices of plant science studies. Students are guided with this objectives. Department has started a practically applied, employment oriented one year Certificate course under Community Development Center Shivaji University Kolhapur. Course is popular in the region. New course: Identification and Conservation of Medicinal Plants has been started. 

SPECIAL FEATURES:

i) Projects are given to students to study the concepts in Botany with practical approach. Eg. Study of Agricultural patters in their villages, waste recycling  into biofertilizers, Vermicomposting ,survey of medicinal Ayurveda practitioners in their areas.
ii) Tours are organized to various Garden visit, forests, nurseries to give exposure to students.
iii) The department conducts seminar for B. Sc. II students.
iv) Department has started a practically applied, employment oriented one year Certificate course under Community Development Center Shivaji University Kolhapur.
v) Three month new course: Identification and Conservation of Medicinal Plants Under Community Development Center Shivaji University Kolhapur, has been started.
