Principal M. R. Desai and Bar. Balalasaheb Khardekar decided to setup an institution for the pursuit of excellence in higher education at Kagal; a backward rural area. In 1950 they started Gopal Krishna Gokhale College as a tutorial college on the Model of Oxford and Cambridge. The management provided free education; free boarding and lodgi7ng to the needy students.
