Brief History: -
Gopal Krishna Gokhale College was established in 1950 at Kagal, a rural town 16 Km. away in south from Kolhapur. The founder members were the two giants in the educational field viz Prin. M. R. Desai and Prin. Br. Balasaheb Khardekar. College library was established since inception of the college i.e. in 1950. As it was difficult to run a college at a rural area like Kagal, it was shifted to Kolhapur in 1954 and along with it the library. The two founder members gave shape to the library by collecting various books on all branches of knowledge from various parts of India and abroad. Due to that, the library is having a very rich collection and in true sense it is a centre for study, reference and information.
THE LIBRARY NAMED AFTER PRIN. M. R. DESAI
The college library was named after late Shikshan Maharshi Prin. M. R. Desai on 16th March 1997 at the auspicious hands of Hon. Vikram Jarag, the then Deputy Mayor of Kolhapur. Prin. M.R. Desai was a great democrat, freedom fighter, the member of Legislative Assembly, an eminent educationist, a lover of English Literature, researcher in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad-Gita.
All his life he devoted to research and the cause of education in and around Kolhapur, Vengurla and some parts of the Karnataka as well. He was a great pioneer in the field of education who always helped the student community especially from the economically weaker section of the society. Hence it is really a matter of pride the library is named after prin. M. R. Desai as a fitting tribute to his memory.
